Birthday Book of Notes:

Made this book of notes for a friend’s birthday and thought I’d share some photos with you! These are always fun to make and I think fun to receive if you like notes and little gifts!

We’re actually having a book of notes workshop this Sunday where we’ll be making these! :) There are still some spots so join us if you’re free, it’ll be a lot of fun.

Book of Notes Giveaway:

I thought it’d be fun to do a little giveaway for a book of notes! In the 5 years I’ve had this blog, I have never done a giveaway for a book of notes, although I’ve thought about doing one for a while! So today you have a chance to win a book of  notes, made by me! This book of notes will be filled with lots of little surprises, don’t want to give too much away.

There will be 2 lucky winners and we’ll also give away a book of  notes kits as well to 2 more winners. You can choose if you’d like to receive your book of notes filled out or blank, so you can fill it out and send it on to someone else. (it’ll still come with all the little gifts)

To enter, simply leave a comment with why you love notes .. either sending or receiving notes. Giveaway ends on April 1st. For an extra chance to win, post a photo on instagram and be sure to tag @ohhellofriend + include hashtag #ohfbookofnotes :)

I didn’t want to give too much away but the book will be filled with lots

of your favorite oh hello friend surprises :)

Book of Notes Kit:

If you don’t know what a book of notes is, click here :) It all started with this book I made my husband many years ago. I haven’t made one in a little while but am thinking I need to do one. Have a couple ideas for book of notes this year – giveaways, swaps. Stay tuned!

Anyway, a couple months ago I had a few requests from readers for a book of notes kit. I thought it was a great idea and it was so fun putting some little kits together knowing people would be making their own notes for friends/loved ones.

I included all the elements I’ve in my books – note capsules, animal paper clips, wood tags, scratch-stickers for secret messages, & loads of envelopes and papers. and here’s how it’s all packaged up!

I put together a few kits and still have some left, they are available here in the shop. If you have someone you’d like to make a book of notes for, you should! They make for really thoughtful and sweet gifts :)

happy friday:

Nick & I go to San Francisco quite often for craft shows. My cousin Samantha lives in SF and is so sweet to let us stay with her every time. We call her place, “hotel sam” now 😉 One time she still let us stay even though she was out of town.  Last time we went, she had rotisserie chicken and green beans ready for us when we got there at midnight. Nick said he felt like a kid and like ‘mom’ was taking care of us. lol. I have some pretty great relatives. My cousin recently made a move to a new place.

To show some appreciation for always so generously and willingly opening hotel sam up to us, I decided to make her a card of gift cards. These are a fun + simple gift. I just fold a piece of paper in half and add envelopes for the gift card and notes. I grabbed a couple gift cards to places I thought she’d like that included home decor for her new place. I love Target gift cards, isn’t that #1 foam finger card cool? Anyway, this idea can easily be used for birthdays or any special occasions. Just fill them with the person’s favorite stores or whatever! I know gift cards aren’t super personal but I love picking out my own things sometimes so I guess that’s why I thought it’d be nice to let her pick out her own things for her new place.
Anyway! It’s Friday, hurray for the weekend! This weekend we are going camping with this dear friend and her fiance. Nick has actually never been camping.. unless you count sleeping in a tent in your backyard 😉 We ended up not going :( Our schedule is so crazy right now. I wish we could do it all. or be in 2 places at once. or just slow down in life to be able to have time to go camping. I don’t know. I was thinking about doing a post about this or something. Anyway, thanks for sharing all your stories from Monday’s post, it was so fun to read them while I was at my show! Have a good one and see you next week friends :)

Notes / Book of notes for Abby:

I met Abby at one of my good friend’s weddings. She was a sweetheart. A few months later, my friend told me Abby was having a hard time with her parents divorce. My parents got divorced when I was really young too. Actually, I can barely remember a time we were a real family. So I sent Abby a little book of (encouragement) notes. The time when you’re young and growing up is so hard and things that happen with family really make an impact. I just wanted to reach out to Abby and tell her it would be okay.
At the end I put some stamps and some extra cards in case Abby wanted to write back. These are so much fun to make because they’re pretty easy and it is nice to actually write for a change. (Taking notes at Alt Summit in my notebook, my hand started cramping after a few minutes, haha)
Who can you write some encouragement notes to today?
ps: here are some other notes that have been
written if you need some other inspiration:

notes for mac:

Sadly, we don’t have too much holiday going on around here. Things are just so busy with craft shows and shipping orders from the shops, I just can’t seem to find the time. Found these images in my archives and thought I’d share them with you .. I made this a couple months ago, and it could easily be switched to a holiday theme and make a great little gift for a friend or loved one.
You know I love notes. I especially love writing and giving notes. Making these little book-of-notes is a lot of fun. So a few months ago at Renegade LA, I met Mac. He’s the son of a blog friend – Nora. Mac is probably one of the coolest high schoolers I know. He is super fun, creative, and sweet. So when Nora invited me over to their house for tea, I knew I had to bring something! I made Mac a card filled with notes and little surprises, including a bow-tie. I’m honored Mac thought it was cool and even wore the bow-tie too! Here are some shots of the book that was made especially for Mac.
Have you left a note for someone you love lately?
and in case you missed it, here’s a recap of other note-books I’ve made in the past :) Maybe I’ll try making a holiday one and post it up to share.

Notes for Nicholas:

Nicholas often has to work late at his job. (we’re talking over 12 hour days sometimes!) A couple months ago, he was working late all week and so I made him some encouraging notes, to help through those long nights. It is so funny because a reader, Torrie, actually just commented last Friday about wanting to see some more ‘book of notes’ posts, so this post is for you Torrie! 😉

So unlike the other book I made Nicholas, this one was only one page. I included a couple little notes, a bible verse, a music playlist (that I made him online) and some other misc things.

What about you? Is there someone that may need some encouragement in your life? Make them a book of notes! It’s really simple, and lots of fun. You just need paper, and maybe a printer if you want to print anything out. Just let me know if you need any pointers/tips 😉

a book of notes, for my mom:

Has anyone been reading my blog since the original book of notes? That was quite some time ago. But I remember going from 100 views a day to 3000 or something that one day, for that post.
So you may remember last year, I shared that my mom was diagnosed with cancer. Over the months, everyone was so encouraging and sweet. Your notes and comments about my mom were such a blessing. We were able to go to the chemo sessions with my mom, but on her very last treatment, Nick and I were on our honeymoon. So since I couldn’t be there, I put together some notes for her. I also got my brothers in on it, and since they’re boys and this is really not their thing, it was even more special that they wrote sweet little notes for our mom.
Thought I’d share this book with you. Hopefully you can be inspired to make your own book of notes for a friend or loved one. They make great heartfelt gifts. I would love to receive one from.. nicholas 😉
In the Chinese culture, we have animals for the year we are born. I am an ox, my older brother is a tiger and my younger brother is a rabbit. So I had these martha stewart animal shapes laying around and we each wrote a note on one. Well, I improvised using a cat for my older bro, since there weren’t any tiger shapes 😉
My older bro typed his letters and glued them onto the cards I gave him. lol. I tried to use lots of yellow, since that is her favorite color. It is always fun to make these little books, and more importantly: my mom is now cancer free! We are truly blessed.

a thank you book:

i made a small note-book for nick’s parents a couple months ago, filled with thank you notes for everything. they are the sweetest couple and nick is who is he because of them (and jesus of course) just wanted to share it with you – they are so fun + simple to make. perhaps you can send one to a friend just because :)
note book.
note book.note book.
note book.

more notes:

so i hope you are not tired of notes yet! i had an idea while i was driving one night to make nick a ‘web scavenger hunt note book’ where i made him some small handwritten notes that contained web addresses he had to go to, in order to find the real note! i thought it was neat and would make it fun for him to find the notes on the internet. some of the web notes were images, but i did record a couple video notes too, which i probably won’t be sharing cause i was super silly and i’d be embarassed 😉

this note directed nicholas to the playlist of songs i selected for him.

we’re talking, lots of cheesy ‘love’ songs :)

this note contained “an important reminder” which had him go here

this note contained a video message!

the final message had him go to a website for some cutsey images i collected
and placed on a website for him to read :)

so anyway, if you want to do something like this for a friend or someone special, it’s easy! to make the web notes, i used iweb and my web camera for the videos. if you have iweb + a mobileme (or .mac) account through apple, you know how easy it is to create and publish websites.

if you don’t have a mac, that’s okay too! you will need a place to make websites for your ‘web notes’ (you can try google sites.) and a web camera (if you want to include video notes)

the notes included:

– a really cheesy lovers playlist! (via
– 2 video notes.
– 1 picture note.
– 1 note of found images.

but get creative! create the web notes you want to include, get them organized, then create a book of notes and simply write the web addresses out on each page.

oh, the last element i used was this site, which shortens long web addresses into something like, “” so you can have a shorter URL in your written messages in the book.
